Day 6
Character of God
“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” Psalm 103:8
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” 1 John 4:8
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
One of the most important things that you can do is establish a correct belief in Who God is in your life. Depending on your background with God before you came to Christ, you might have a limited perspective of Who He is. There are many aspects of God. Scripture shows us from the start of time God’s desire to be in relationship with us.
A few descriptions of God are that He is good, love, merciful, gracious, a provider, kind, faithful, just, holy, righteous, a good shepherd, and compassionate. If you connect the truth that the Holy Spirit is God, then you will notice that the fruit of the Holy Spirit are not only things that we want in our lives but also are aspects of Who God is: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” Galatians 5:22-23
One attribute of God’s character to understand is that the love of God the Father is unconditional, meaning that it’s not going to change. Your ability to receive the love of God will change, but He will never change.
The revelation of God’s love is not a one-time glimpse God gives you for you to be born again and then never experience again in the future. Actually, this moment allowed you to step into a deeper place of relationship and love with Jesus that you were unable to access before in your life. It is a continually growing knowledge of God’s love.
The love of God is something to be experienced and received daily as a follower of Christ. The love of God is also not about your getting a raise, a better car, or an easier life. If you think that this is a determining factor of the love of God in your life, then you will have missed the truth of the love of God. These things are nice, but God is love, and His love is expressed through Jesus coming to Earth and dying on the cross.
God the Father has made you a child of God through faith in His Son. His character towards you, His child, does not change. Your understanding of Who He is will change but God will never change. In this world, you will change, and people around you will change, but God will never change. His character of Who He is is unchangeable. This is great to know as the world around you can be shaken, but God is never shaken or afraid of anything. He is God.
Prayer:
“God, I want to know You. You are good, love, kind, compassionate, merciful, and much more than I know at the moment. I want to experience You and Your love today. Help me to know You as Father, God. Show me Who You are, and may I come close to You as I see you rightly. Amen.”
